Information about MHTT
August, 2006

As an initiative of military scientists, the Kiss Károly Military Science Club, named after a knowledgeable officer of the 19th century, was launched in the mid-eighties. The members of the Club initiated the founding of the Association.

The Hungarian Association of Military Science is a charitable non-profit organization currently counting about eight hundred members. Among its purposes are

  • to advocate military science, to study the issues of general security,
  • to promote putting academic achievements into practice,
  • to provide a common platform for the activity of experts interested in and dealing with military science in an academic approach,
  • to provide the members of the Association with an appropriate forum in broadening their knowledge, in assisting their research, in spreading and publishing their professional achievements, and in representing their interests,
  • to preserve the traditions of Hungarian military science activities.

The members of the Association act in the framework of twenty-two sections and two regional branches.

The Board of Trustees coordinates the work of the sections and branches of the Association. The members of the Board are the chairpersons of each section and seven elected officers, the Chairman, the Vice Chairman, and the five Deputy Chairpersons elected by the Board of Delegates for a period of three years. The Board of Delegates meets annually, usually in March-April, when the Association reports on the work done in the previous year and the financial situation, and the Board approves the programme of work and the budget of the current year.

Day-to-day activity between    sessions of the Board of Trustees is carried out by the seven-member Executive Committee. The work of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee is assisted by the Supervisory Board, the Ethics Committee and the Awards Committee.

The Association is an inclusive organization that brings together the broad security sector; among its members are not only soldiers but also border guards, policemen, customs officers, and members of intelligence agencies, etc. The sections are organized accordingly and so are our relationships with public agencies, such as with the leaders of the Ministry of Defence and the Hungarian Defence Forces, and the Commander of the Hungarian Border Guard. We also have links with academic commissions of various public agencies, such as that of the Military Intelligence Agency, and with non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and other academic associations similar to MHTT.

We have an exceptionally good relationship with Zrínyi Miklós National Defence University and its postgraduate schools like the Military Science School and the Military Engineering Postgraduate School.

Our work and existence is subsidized by the Ministry of Defence, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the Military Science Foundation established by the Chief of the Defence Staff.

The Hungarian Association of Military Science organizes two-three central events, conferences and seminars annually, while the individual sections arrange their own numerous events as well.

The Association celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2005. We exist since 1990, and we have remained loyal to the initial intent of the Association's founders ever since: we bring together experts and researchers interested in military science and related disciplines, we provide a forum for their manifestations, we organize this discipline of sciences and ensure the link to other disciplines.

The quarterly Hadtudomány is published under the auspices of MHTT and provides a forum for military, security and other scientific analyses. We extensively publish articles of young researchers and postgraduate students. In the issues of the first fifteen years more than six hundred articles, studies and papers have been published, which have covered most of the spectrum of military science and related disciplines. The number of our authors is close to two hundred, while we also have colleagues who publish regularly.

Regarding the other main area of our academic activity, we have organized almost thirty central events, not to mention the several hundreds of professional forums held by our individual sections. Altogether more than one hundred entries arrived for the competitions invited by the Association, including some very high level works. We have regularly invited entries for competitions in the past years.

MHTT is entitled and gladly willing to prepare recommendations within its competency. It is eligible to grant the Expert title. Around sixty people are registered among its experts, whose list is regularly refined.

The Association has established two awards. The Tarnáky Prize recognizes excellence of academic activity, while the Korponay Prize recognizes academic achievements of young members under the age of 35. Furthermore, the Association's highest level recognition, a golden ring engraved with the initials of MHTT is presented for lifetime achievement.

We publish our statutes, history, the names of our awarded members and experts, and our current events on the website of the Association.

Dr. László Nagy
Chairman of the Board
